Here’s a handy technique that you can use. Its application is when you want to turn your mind off to get to sleep, meditate, or to generally calm yourself down.
1. Engage yourself in the “Here & Now” – live in the moment.
Focus your awareness
on what you’re experiencing at this moment in time. If you dwell in the past, then
the memory of anything or everything that ever happened or didn’t happen may come
to mind and kick off an extensive thought trail containing pictures, words and feelings.
By choosing to be in the current moment you close the door to all of this. If you
wander into the future you again are opening the door to a realm of possibilities,
unknowns and speculation and unending mental activity. By choosing to focus you consciousness
on the present moment, what’s happening for you right now you effectively turn everything
off other than what’s happening for you right now. Enjoy the pleasure of relaxing
in your bed after a busy day, or sitting comfortably in a chair to take time out
to meditate and come back refreshed or to just be immersed in the task at hand –
what’s known as “Being in the zone” or “In flow”.
2. Protective shield.
Do you remember the experiment in physics at school where an
electric bell is put inside a glass bell jar? The bell is switched on and then the
air is drawn out with a vacuum pump. As the vacuum increases, the sound of the bell
decreases – eventually to silent. So imagine a protective shield around you. This
shield is impermeable to any thoughts which would invade your peace & quiet. Inside
this protecting veil is peace & tranquillity.
3. Summary.
When you focus on the here & now and put your shield around you, straight
away you’ll experience quietness. You can do this as often as you like. Remember
that you may have become used to a constant bombardment of thoughts and feelings
– some negative some positive, but remember this is not a normal state of being.
Our ideal state of being is having a largely clear head occupied only by useful thoughts
which help us move closer to the things we want to achieve. We have virus checkers
on our computers to keep out the bad stuff, we need something similar in our minds
to do the same.
